Frequently Asked Questions

There maybe some confusion for the beginning students. So I will attempt to answer some of the most Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) about TerHaar TaeKwonDo.

Q: Are You the teacher?

A: Yes and no. Ms. Dilley and I are the instructors; the students themselves are the teachers. Martial Arts is an individual effort. The amount of good you get out of it is directionally proportionate to the amount of effort you put into it.

Q: Isn't Martial Arts a violent activity?

A: On the contrary. It has been found that people who study the martial arts are more likely to be non-violent than people who have no training at all. We don't teach attacking techniques until a student is at least a Brown Belt. The first technique we teach is blocking. Only after the attack is neutralized can a student decide if further action is required

Q: When do I get my (White, Yellow, Black, etc.) belt?

A: The time for advancement to the belt ranks varies greatly. But an average is, 6 months for the Yellow Belt and between 3 1/2 and 5 years for the Black belt. As I said earlier martial arts is an individual effort. In addition, there may be other factors that would cause a student to lag behind or to advance faster than his or her peers; such as physical development or mental ability. None of these factors will prevent a student from becoming a great martial artist.

Q: Why so long?

A: There are a couple of reasons it takes so long. (1) We meet only twice a week (for now). (2) (The main and most important reason) I will not put a belt on students just to keep them. My conscience will not allow me to send a student out into the world thinking he or she is better equipped to handle the situations they may encounter out there, than they really are.

Q: How do we get promoted?

A: After the beginning class is completed and a student elects to join the advanced class, they will be given a "Chart". This chart is the written curriculum. They must complete all the techniques on the chart before they are ready to test for advancement.

Q: When do I get my Uniform? (Dobok)

A: Uniforms are not required by the beginning class. After the first class you should find out that simple workout clothes are the best for now. When you decide to get a uniform, there are a couple of ways to go about it. I can order a uniform for a student, at $25 each. It takes between 3 and 5 days to get here. If you are in a hurry you can go to a Martial Arts Store and purchase one. The best M/A store in Las Vegas is in front of the Red Rock Movie theater. The cost there is between $25 and $35.

Q: Do I need equipment to spar?

A: Students will not "Spar" until they are in the Advanced Class and only then under very close supervision. Equipment is not needed until they are at least a yellow belt or higher.

Q: Do you teach the metaphysical aspects of martial arts?

A: Not in the sense that there are unknown forces that will help you. In the martial arts there are forces that we control that can enhance our abilities, but if you are looking for inner peace, you should take up meditation.

Q: How do we get in touch with you, when class is out?

A: You can contact me through Brinley Community School at 646-9046 or through the TaeKwonDo School voice mail at 595-5715 or email me at wulung@cox.net from the internet.
